Muhammad Abduh argued that Muslims could not simply rely on the interpretations of texts provided by medieval clerics; they needed to use reason to keep up with changing times.
Abfuh also accepted the distinction between essences and accidents, arguing that reason gives us knowledge of the latter but not of the former. He accepted the distinction between necessary being, possible things and impossible things, using it to prove the existence of God.
